Nikon Df vs D600, D800, D4

The new Nikon Df represents a new segment of digital-SLR camera for Nikon, however it is positioned at a level betwen the D600/D610 and the D800. It features some professional-level features, along with other features in common with the enthusiast-range D600/D610. Most notably, it shares the image sensor and EXPEED 3 processor with the flagship D4. However the Df only runs at half the D4’s maximum shutter speed (5.5 fps vs 11 fps).

It is priced between the D610 and D800, although closer to the D800. Some of the build features such as the magnesium-poly-carbonate composite body are shared in the D610, as is the metering sensor and auto focus system. To save space, the EN-EL14a battery was used on the Df, the same battery used in the D5300. However, the Nikon Df has a low power mode which can yield 1,400 shots per charge, 50% more than either the D600 or D800 can muster with their larger-capacity EN-EL15 battery.

The Df lacks video capabilities and has no on-board flash. What the Df does offer is an experience unlike any other existing Nikon DSLR for manual control. On its top panel is a plethora of analog dials to select every setting: mode, ISO, shutter speed, shutter release mode, and exposure compensation. These top-panel controls have not been on any Nikon digital SLR, until now. The Df is also fully compatible with AI, AI-S and even non-AI lenses. The non-AI compatibility is something no other Nikon DSLR can offer.

  1. It would be great if Nikon made Df2 with Af from D750 and shutter from d800 (with rating 200000 shoots) and it would be the greatest camera ever!!!
